Purpose: This study identified the process of change, self efficacy, smoking temptation, decisional balance corresponding to the stage of change based on trans theoretical model in elderly.
Method: For the selection of variables, the trans theoretical theory was used. A survey was conducted with 384 elderly smokers resident in one autonomous district. Descriptive analysis, ANOVA and Duncann¡¯s multiple
comparison test were used.
Result: The results of this study were follows : 1. This subjects were distributed in each stage of change : they were 165 subjects(43%) in the precontemplation stage, 106(27.6%) subjects in contemplation stage, 21 subject(5.5%) in preparation stage, 36 subject(9.4%) in action stage, 56 subject(14.6%) in maintenance stage. 2. Analysis of variance show that the
experiential process(F=13.09, P=.00), behavioral process(F=15.65, P=.00), nicotine dependency(F=12.51, P=.00), self-efficacy(F=18.76, P=.00), smoking temptation(F=27.59, P=.00), pros and cons of decisional balance(F=21.49, P=.00, F=18.15,P=.00) were significantly associated with the stage of change.
Conclusions:: This study can provide the basis of staged matching smoking cessation program using trans theoretical model for more effective and useful intervention in elderly.
